Key Questions and Answers 🔗︎

Lukas: What does the Munich Security Conference mean specifically for our community?

Philip: So, I think what becomes really clear is that the threats faced by nations and corporations are becoming increasingly evident and pronounced in relation to what Maltego is really about. These threats are international and hybrid, meaning they combine both real-world elements and social engineering, the social aspects of threats, with computer networks. They pose a very real danger to the West, and we need to consider how we as a community can support both nation-state actors and corporations to be best equipped to tackle these threats.

Lukas: What do its side events mean for our community and industry?

Philip: I think that is really encouraging because the overwhelming message here is that companies, players, and institutions want to cooperate and collaborate on these global challenges. As private businesses, we can contribute to this by building tools that not only solve the problem but are also open to collaboration with other partners from both sides of the Atlantic. This ensures that we truly provide our customers with the solutions they need to face these threats.

Lukas: What was your impression of this year’s conference compared to last year?

Philip: So, maybe a good thing is not too much change. I think all players recognize that it is a challenge in an environment where we need to collaborate, and on that level, we are very much looking forward to continuing to do that. What is increasingly a topic is how our businesses and the way we operate are influenced by regulation.

There are obviously important ongoing directives in the EU, but also with regard to US regulation that may influence how we can do business and how we need to develop our products. That’s certainly something we all need to take a look at and see whether our infrastructure and systems are well-equipped to serve players in different jurisdictions.

Regulation and volatility here are certainly topics that came up a lot. It’s a topic that we, as a company, cannot handle on our own in isolation, but we need to work together with other players, align, and try to contribute to that conversation in a positive way.

Lukas: What is Maltego’s approach to partnerships and their significance?

Philip: Yeah, Maltego really grew together with its partners, and those partners, first and foremost, are certainly data providers and companies that have unique and differentiated access to data sources.

As a data integration and analytics company, Maltego has always been very open and customizable to accommodate these different data sources, which is highly beneficial for the user, who remains our primary focus. I think that continues to be a major driver of why customers choose Maltego. They often say, ‘I have internal data stored in databases or workflow tools, but I also have external data from various providers—threat intelligence providers, company data providers—that I need to merge.’ They’ve found that Maltego is a strong platform for that.

We’re excited to push that forward, focusing on enhancing our internal technology to make data ingestion easier. We aim to provide our customers and partners with the tools to simplify this process and help merge these different data sets, so users can extract the essence from disparate sources. And that’s really what we’re focused on at Maltego.

Lukas: How does our partnership create a win-win for Maltego, customers, and partners?

Philip: I mean, it always comes down to what the customer wants and needs. I think this is where the mission often aligns. We have data partners, both existing and new, who approach us and say, ‘I’m working with this high-profile client, and they’ve mentioned that they need our data integrated into Maltego to fully benefit from it.’

Our partnership team then collaborates with that data provider to find the fastest path to integration. This creates a win-win: the customer gains the added benefit of another data source within Maltego, the data partner closes a deal and gains a new customer, and for us, it is an opportunity to expand the platform’s value, which naturally grows as we integrate more data sources out of the box.

That is a major focus for how we want to build Maltego, to be a platform that enables specialist and highly differentiated data providers to thrive, while ultimately delivering the best experience for the customer.

Lukas: How does the Maltego user community drive innovation on the platform?

Philip: Many talked about the tools that developers and data providers can utilize to integrate new data sources. We make sure to continuously improve on that, so the experience becomes easier. At the same time, users have incredible customization opportunities, especially when it comes to creating workflows. For example, they can set up a series of queries, what we call transforms, in a specific sequence to expedite repetitive tasks or even automate them.

We also have communities that share these machines and workflows with one another. Similarly, certain use cases require specific adaptations in how link analysis is displayed or how users tailor it to their needs. This level of customization is something that made Maltego stand out and continues to set us apart, especially for sophisticated users.

At the same time, we learn from this process by observing the ideas of our most advanced users regarding how Maltego can be further automated and improved. We then integrate these ideas into our product development. What I am particularly excited about is what we are currently working on and planning to release in the coming months. We are bringing these insights into our browser platform, which is a huge step forward. It will allow us to respond much faster to user inputs and feedback and will set Maltego on an entirely new trajectory for the future.

Lukas: How do you see Maltego’s future in community-driven development and its role for us?

Philip: Yeah, as a platform, you have a huge opportunity but also a responsibility, and that is something we are very aware of. We work closely with our partners, the wider community, and ultimately our users to understand what they need from Maltego to be successful. That is the ultimate challenge for us to solve, and when we do, everyone benefits.

So, the boat will rise with the tide, and that is what we are focused on right now. We understand that the specific and differentiating capabilities of the Maltego platform—bringing together various data sources, merging them in meaningful ways, and offering extensive customization—continue to be crucial for our most sophisticated users, and we remain committed to providing that.

At the same time, we recognize that the industry and the community are expanding into broader use cases that involve larger teams. In response, we are condensing the most important workflows and capabilities and repackaging them to be accessible to less technical users.

Over the past two to three years, we have seen massive adoption of this approach, especially in the public and government sectors. Now, we are increasingly seeing it spread into the commercial space, where larger teams focus on fraud and other trust and safety issues.

Our focus over the next 12 months is to balance these two needs—continuing to support advanced users with deep customization while also distilling the core functionalities to make them more accessible to a wider range of users.
